Crack for the Brain

Geosocialmedia Daily SoapsFinally it is proven.
Television programs – especially daily soaps – are bull$hit!

Honestly.
Seriously.
Truly.

It is like in the time of the old Romans: panem et circenses! - meaning “bread and circuses” (or bread and games).

This metaphor stands for a superficial means of appeasement. In that case it describes a populace that no longer values civic virtues and the public life. Obviously the people are so bored and unsatisfied with their own lives that they need to watch it from others, fictive figurines. Well, that is not that bad at all, is it basically a huge play. But what is freaking me out is, that nothing serious happens there and I can give you the perfect example for it.

I wasn’t in Germany for one year now. So I haven’t kept up with my “usual dailys”. I was used to see four of them in a row, in total 3 hours a day. The last days I was home early enough, so I decided to sneak in, to see what was going on there during the last year and also was seriously afraid of don’t keeping it up. Being lost in the storyline of the beloved series!

First I wondered why one of them was extended to double length, while another one was not shown anymore. At this point I was joshing, that it was only me who kept it alive and because I am gone, it died horribly. Then I was wondering and analyzing the rest of the series. They were as usual. When I say “as usual” I mean it – literally.

Come on guys, you were producing one entire year and seriously n-o-t-h-i-n-g happened?! After one or two evenings I was again very familiar with all of it. Well there are two or three new characters, maybe an entire new family but in general n-o-t-h-i-n-g new. It seems like no time had passed. There are still the same problems, they are having the same problems in rotations all over the series, means spontaneous gay, cancer, stroke, heart attacks, drugs, kidnapping, love and breaking up.

The serious question to the authors of this kind of series is: how can you mange it, writing one year of nothing relevant and keep the audience still amused?

Seriously, this kind of job I want to have too. It is looking very easy for me, keep these characters alive and let not really serious things happened to them. Also the dialogues are creepy. Neither that they are the best actors ever nor the best looking persons. When they are written out of their series, they are dead, not only in the show but mostly also in their career. Sometimes it happens that one of another series is acting in another as a complete new character and role.

The question is, what keeps the audience there? The normal problems of those wannabes? That also aristocrats have to deal with the normal stuff everyone else is? That I can see, that my life is not that horrible because the one of them is worse? That they are made to flee from the reality? That it makes forgetting the individual drama?

For some people, the characters in the series are like a member of their own family. Does that mean, they don’t have friends in real life? Or do they want to be part of the “cool gang”?

I know people who are recording the episodes when they are not at home to see them. Also they are getting very upset if you try to reach them during their “series hour”. Conversations happen like this: “Can you call me later? I need to see this NOW!”

When I look at the bunch of my friends, their lives are much more interesting than that of a single figurine of those. And I am attached to them and care, but I don’t for those in the series.

Let me end today with a good meant advice:

Go out in the real world.
Meet your friends!
Read a good book!
Go to a play!
Interact with people!

Do whatever you want but stay away from this kind of crap!
